It is always neat when there is a birthday to celebrate such as that of Franz Joseph Haydn. There have been few who have contributed so much to the development of music as that man had. This will be a very brief look at his music.

Symphony No. 64. Hob. I:64 "tempora mutantur" performed by the Schlierbacher Kammerorchester led by Thomas Fey.
Symphony No. 104, "London" performed by the Orchestra of St. Luke's under the baton of Sir Charles Mackerras.
The American composer Walter Piston is not heard as often as he should be, his works are very accessible and of very good quality. Here are two of them.

William Grant Still premiered his opera "Troubled Island" on today's date in 1949. His first symphony premiered earlier, it was written in 1930. Still was an all-around American composer composing music for movies, arranging music for jazz bands and participating in same.
