Afternoon Classics - Tuesday, April 21, 2009

This week brings us the birthday of Sergei Prokofiev (on Thursday) so we shall be playing his music and that of some others on todays program. We will start with some of the standard concert repertoire and move on from there.
       Boccherini:  Cello sonata, Coenraad Bloemendal - cello and Joel Quarrington - bass.
       Prokofiev:    Symphony No. 1 in D, Op. 25 "Classical Symphony" Riccardo Muti conducting the  Philadelphia Orchestra.
                               String Quartet No. 1 in B minor, Op. 50, the Emerson String Quartet.
                              Symphony No. 5 in B flat major, Leonard Bernstein conducting the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.
       Salonen: LA Variations, Esa-Pekka Salonen conducting the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
       Nielsen:  Incidental music to "Alladin" FS 89, Lance Friedel and the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.
      Prokofiev:  Alexander Nevsky, Valery Gergiev and the Kirov Orchestra & Chorus of the Mariinsky Theatre, St. Petersburg.
                           Lieutenant Kije Suite,  Paavo J√§rvi and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.
