Afternoon Classics - Wednesday, May 27, 2009

Today's program has as its highlight an interview with Todd Hunt, artistic director for Opera to Go and a discussion of the upcoming Spotlight program. Members of the "cast" were discussed as well as some of the pieces to be sung in the program. A few of those pieces were played on the air. To put one into the mindset of a vocal program the first hour featured some very wonderful vocal recordings. But first - 
Chopin:  Andante Spianato and Grande Polonaise in E flat Op. 22, Jon Nakamatsu at the piano.
Ravel:  Sheherazade featuring Kiri Te Kanawa on the vocal and John Pritchard conducting the Orchestra of the Belgian National Opera.
Mozart:  Three arias featuring Cecilia Bartoli on the vocal and the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale de Santa Cecilia, Myung-Whun Chung conducting.
Tosti:  Three songs featuring Ben Heppner on the vocal and Members of the London Symphony.
During the interview an aria by Lalo was played as well as the last two arias and the duet from Act I of La Boheme.
Bolcom: Nine Bagatelles played by Jon Nakamatsu.
Dexter:  Siciliano performed by John Tomlinson and the RTE Concert Orchestra.
Durey:   Sonatine performed by Emily Beynon on the flute and Andrew West on the piano.
Raff: Romeo and Juliet - Overture, Francesco D;Avalos and the Philharmonia Orchestra.
Raff: Symphony No. 3 "Im Walde" performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra under the baton of
Francesco D'Avalos.
Raff: Abends-Rhapsodie, D'Avalos and the Philharmonia.
