Afternoon Classics - Tuesday, June 9, 2009

Today we will celebrate Robert Schumann's birthday (June 8th) with some of his music and also the 1937 premier (also June 8th) of Carl Orff's magnus opus. 
Schumann:  Overture, scherzo and finale, (1841), Op. 52, John Eliot Gardiner conducting the Orchestre Revolutionairre et Romantique.
  Sonata No. 2 in D minor, Op. 121, Jennifer Koh - violin; Reiko Uchida - piano.
  Symphony No. 1 in B flat, Op. 38 "Spring" with Gardiner and the Orchestre Revolutioniarre et Romantique.
  Cello Concerto in A minor, Op. 129, Mstislav Rostropovich at the cello and Leonard Bernstein conducting the Orchestre National de France.
Orff: Carmina Burana, Natalie Dessay soprano, Thomas Hampson baritone and Gerard Lesne countertenor with Michel Plasson conducting the Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse.
Schumann:    Klaviersonate in f-Moll, Op. 14. Andras Schiff at the piano.
Moravec: Chamber Symphony performed by an ensemble from the Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival.
