A Little Bit of Broadway

Lionel Bart's Oliver!

Based on a classic Victorian novel by Charles Dickens, Oliver is filled with wonderful music, great roles, and lots of kids! A major hit, first on the West End, then on Broadway, and later with regional theaters all over the world, it’s hard to find anyone who doesn’t know music from this show!

Overture/Food, Glorious Food
I shall scream
Boy for Sale; Where is love?
Consider Yourself
You've got to pick a pocket or two
It's a fine life
I'd do anything
Be back Soon
My name
As long as he needs me
Who will buy?
Reviewing the situation
As long as he needs me (reprise)
Reviewing the situation (Reprise)

Music, Lyrics, Book:
Lionel Bart
Basis: Charles Dickens' novel Oliver Twist

Well, while we are talking about boy performers, let’s listen to some selections from The Boy from Oz, about the life of entertainer Peter Allan.

When I get my name in lights
When I get my name in lights (reprise)
Everything Old is New again

Finale: I go to Rio

A Little Bit of Broadway

It’s a Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers Afternoon

There’s something about a snowy winter evening that just begs for something warm to drink while you are cuddled under an afghan watching a classic dance movie. And nothing is more classic than the movies Ginger Rogers made with Fred Astaire at RKO. So, get yourself something warm to drink, snuggle down under the comforter and let you imagination soar while listening to Fred and Ginger.

A Little Bit of Broadway

One of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s favorite books as a child was Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T. S. Eliot. In 1981, he turned this whimsical book of poetry about Cats into a musical that ran for 21 years in London and over 18 in New York. (It's currently the 2nd longest running Broadway show, surpassed only by Lloyd Webber's Phanton of the Opera.) The Jellicle cats meet for their annual Jellicle ball to see who gets to be reborn to the heaviside layer. Not only did it win lots of awards, it introduced the now standard “Memory” to the world.

A Little Bit of Broadway

The King and I
1956 film version

Once upon a time a widow from Wales sailed with her young son to become the teacher of English to the children of the King of Siam. She wrote a book about her experiences, called Anna and the King of Siam. Broadway star Gertrude Lawrence read the book and knew it would be a wonderful Broadway show and a great role for her. She took it to Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II and they created a show that has entranced generations. From Getting to Know You to Whistle a Happy Tune to Hello, Young Lovers -- we all know these tunes. And it introduced the world to the ultimate King of Siam – Yul Brynner.
