Leader of the Pack
A “jukebox musical” before the term was invented, Leader of the Pack is the story of pop music singer, songwriter and record producer Ellie Greenwich (10/23/1940 – 8/26/2009). Debuting in 1984, this musical tells of story of her life through her songs, which includes many of the major doo-wop hits of early 1960’s - The Ronettes, The Crystals, Neil Diamond, Manfred Mann, The Shangri-Las, The Raindrops, Tommy James & the Shondells, Bob B. Soxx & the Blue Jeans, Darlene Love, Lesley Gore, Connie Francis, Ike and Tina Turner, just to name a few. The show itself had its problems, but the music was never considered one of them!

A Little Bit of Broadway
Sister Act
A Divine Musical Comedy
We continue our look at musicals based on Hollywood films – this week, it’s a musical based on the 1992 film Sister Act. Playing right now at the London Palladium, reviews have mixed. Some liked the music – others didn’t. Some thought it was too faithful to the film, others not enough. Since I haven’t seen it, I can’t judge that, but I can say I miss the music of the film. What was a rather sweet fairytale now seems pretty brash. Judge for yourself……

A Little Bit of Broadway
9 to 5
The Musical
In the “olden” days, Hollywood turned to Broadway for inspiration. A good musical knew they could sell the show to Hollywood – Holly might “improve” the show, but the money was good. However, in the past 10-years, Broadway has turned to Hollywood. The latest entry is the Tony nominated 9 to 5. Filled with great music by Dolly Parton, the musical follows the film pretty faithfully.
Reviews were mixed, mostly feeling that the show had too many big production numbers and that Act 1 was too long. Praise has been unstinting for Dolly Parton’s score. The general consensus is that it’s a pleasant way to spend the evening. But do it soon. 9 to 5 closes September 6.
Act I

A Little Bit of Broadway
The Wiz
Movie version 1978
Well, it was a critical flop, lost millions of dollars, and killed Diana Ross’s film career. But the Sidney Lumet film version of the stage hit The Wiz, an urbanized setting of The Wizard of Oz, has a great cast, even if the Quincy Jones arrangements of the music seem way overdone 30 years later. But this film showed us an engaging 19-year old Michael Jackson, who was undeniably the best part of the whole film.
Diana Ross: Dorothy Gale
Michael Jackson: Scarecrow
Lena Horne: Glinda, the Good Witch Of The South
Ted Ross: Cowardly Lion
Nipsey Russell: Tin Man
Thelma Carpenter: Miss One, the Good Witch of the North
Theresa Merritt: Aunt Em
Stanley Greene: Uncle Henry
Richard Pryor: The Wiz
Mabel King: Evillene, the Wicked Witch of the West
THE SONGS
Overture Part I (instrumental)
Overture Part II (instrumental)
The Feeling That We Had - Aunt Emma and Chorus
Can I Go On?- Dorothy
Tornado/Glinda's Theme (instrumental)
He's The Wizard - Miss One and Chorus
Soon As I Get Home/Home - Dorothy
You Can't Win, You Can't Break Even - Scarecrow and The Four Crows
Ease On Down The Road #1 - Dorothy and Scarecrow
What Would I Do If I Could Feel? - Tin Man
Slide Some Oil to Me - Tin Man
Ease On Down The Road #2 - Dorothy, Scarecrow, and Tin Man
I'm A Mean Ole Lion - Cowardly Lion

Poppy Girls Theme (instrumental)
Be a Lion - Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion
End Of The Yellow Brick Road (instrumental)

Wednesday Crosscurrents 8/5
Host - John Gaguine
Today's show was inspired by the two women who did Front Porch or Back Porch, whichever it was, a week ago last night. They played a lot of great country. I'm going to try to duplicate that, but limiting myself to the newer female country singers. Very few, if any, mentions today of pick-up trucks, or trains, or momma, or prison, or getting drunk.
The lyrics to most of these songs are fantastic.
Mary Chapin Carpenter - Why Walk When You Can Fly?, Down at the Twist and Shout, When Halley Came to Jackson, Stones in the Road - all written by her
Kathy Mattea - The Cape, 33,45,78 (Record Time), The Streets of Your Town, Listen to the Radio (Nanci Griffith)
Patty Loveless - Tear-Stained Letter, I Miss Who I Was (with You), Lonely Too Long, Pretty Little Miss
Suzy Bogguss and Chet Atkins - When She Smiled at Him, In the Jailhouse Now (Jimmie Rogers), Forget About It (also covered by Alison Krauss), Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word (Elton John, Bernie Taupin)
Trisha Yearwood - Thinkin' About You, XXX's and OOO's (An American Girl), You Can Sleep While I Drive (Melissa Etheridge), I Wanna Go Too Far
MC Carpenter - Shut Up and Kiss Me, Going Out Tonight, Middle Ground (again, all written by her)
Carpenter, Emmy Lou Harris, and Sheryl Crow - Flesh and Blood (Johnny Cash, from Kindred Spirits, a fine Johnny Cash tribute CD)
Mattea - That's All the Lumber You Sent, Ashes in the Wind, Nobody's Gonna Rain on My Parade
Tammy Wynette - Please Come to Boston (Dave Loggins; also covered by Joan Baez)
