We will wrap up this week with some heavyweights - two pieces by Dmitri Shostakovich. Both are significant, the first is the Symphony No. 11 - The Year 1905 which is a musical depiction of the first peasant uprising against the Tsar in St. Petersburg at the Winter Palace. (Memorialized on film as "The Battleship Potemkin." To begin with:

A Little Bit of Broadway

Total Performances: 170
In the 1920’s, Broadway has so many composers and playwrights that even a mega hit would last only 6-8 months until it left to make way for the next musical. None of this modern day tradition of staying forever (think Lion King, for example or Cats). And often, the music disappeared after the show ledt the boards. Sometimes, the publisher just chucked the music into a box, put it into a shelf in a warehouse and forgot about it (just like the art in Raiders of the Lost Ark). Luckily, the music to Kitty’s Kisses was found and now recorded. And it’s so Roaring Twenties – silly and bright and cheerful, with a very happy ending.

A Little Bit of Broadway
Mr. Mark Twain The Musical
Mr. Mark Twain: The Musical is a stage musical biography of American author. Mark Twain. The show ran for 10 summers in Elmira, NY and Hartford, CT (1987-1995) and was telecast on a number of public television stations. Although an abridged LP was released in 1988, just recently an expanded cast recording has been release.
It started out really, really big – over 60 people, with a forty foot turntable (it was done in the National Guard Armory.) However, recently it was restaged and cut down to a more manageable community theater size.

A Little Bit of Broadway
Rock of Ages
These days, Broadway is enjoying jukebox musicals. A jukebox musical is a stage or film musical that uses previously released popular songs as its musical score. Usually it’s one group – Billy Joel (Movin’ Out) and Abba (Mama Mia), but the 2009 Tony nominated Rock of Ages is a homage to those big haired, big sound metal bands of the 1980’s. Using music from over 20 of the those glam bands, and doing it well, this is actually a simple boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl story set in the 1980’s on the Sunset Strip. Reviews have been pretty decent. Those who don’t like it obviously don’t like this era of rock music. This show is like every other musical – if you go in expecting to have a good time, and open your mind enough to accept it’s not Rogers and Hammerstein, you’ll have a good time! And they actually do a really, really good job with music!
