A Little Bit of Broadway

Captain Jinks of the Horse Marines

Well, composer Jack Beeson joined up with librettist Sheldon Harnick, and they turned Clyde Fitch’s 1870’s hit Captain Jinks of the Horse Marines into an operetta. Well, maybe even opera. It sounds very much like the operas written in the last half of the last century. But it stays true to the silly 1870’s plot, where 2 young men make a bet that Captain Jinks can seduce the newest opera singer to come to the American shows. Complications start when he starts falling in love with her and trys to get out of the bet.

Written for the Kansas City Lyric Theater
Colonel Mapleson: Eugene Green
Jinks: Robert Owen Johnson
Willie: Brian Steele
Charlie: Ronald Highley
Aurelia: Carol Wilcox
