Today is an all Grieg day as we celebrate his birthday. Always a highly popular composer most of his works are familiar to all of us. There are a few which fly under the radar though and we will see if we can spot one or two.

Here is one that is not often heard but is tremendously beautiful: Sonata No. 3 in C minor for violin & piano, Op. 45 Edvard Grieg Wanda Wilkomirska - violin; Antonio Barbosa - piano .
This is rarely heard but has a lot of "typical Grieg" about it: String Quartet No. 1 in G minor, Op. 27 Edvard Grieg Chilingirian Quartet
Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 16 Edvard Grieg Leif Ove Andsnes - piano; Dmitri Kityenko Bergen Philharmonic
Four Lyric pieces, Op 68 &7 Edvard Grieg Emil Gillels - piano

A Little Bit of Broadway

The Addams Family

Nominated for two Tony awards, the Addams Family tells the story of those wonderfully macabre family created by cartoonist Charles Addams. There has been a successful TV series in the 1960’s, followed by 2 films in the 1990’s. I wonder why it took so long to come to the stage.

In this plot, Wednesday has fallen in love with a boy from Ohio and has invited him and his family to meet her family. Things go about as strangely as you’d imagine an Addams Family dinner going, but of course, everything ends happily in the end.

Music: Andrew Lippa
Lyrics: Andrew Lippa
Book: Marshall Brickman, Rick Elice
Basis: Comic strip by Charles Adams

• Nathan Lane as Gomez Addams
• Bebe Neuwirth as Morticia Addams
• Terrence Mann as Mal Beineke
• Carolee Carmello as Alice Beineke

• Krysta Rodriguez as Wednesday Addams
• Adam Riegler as Pugsley Addams
• Wesley Taylor as Lucas Beineke

• Zachary James as Lurch

Well, back in the saddle again and with a new set of wheels, so to speak, for propulsion! The program today will be as eclectic as any others, with music stretching from Schumann to Weill. Speaking of Robert Schumann he is 200 years old today, so wish him happy birthday! As for Kurt Weill, we will call on him and his cohort Bertolt Brecht to discuss the "Seven Deadly Sins." (this is a great source of moral consciousness.)

Piano Trio in D minor, Op. 63 Robert Schumann The Castle Trio
Fantasiestücke Robert Schumann Martha Argerich - piano, Natalia Gutman - cello
Symphony No. 3 in E flat, Rhenish, OP. 97 Robert Schumann John Eliot Gardiner Orchestre Revolutionaire et Romantique
Introduction & allegro appassionata, Op. 92 Robert Schumann Sviastalov Richter, Stanislaw Wislocki Warsaw Nathional Philharmonic Orchestra
Toccata in C, Op. 7 Robert Schumann Sviastalov Richter - piano
Three Latin American Sketches Aaron Copland Paul Gambill Nashville Chamber Orchestra
Daphnis et Chloe suite No. 2 Maurice Ravel Georges Pretre SWR Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart
Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes Benjamin Britten Paavo Järvi Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra
The Seven Deadly Sins Kurt Weill/Bertolt Brecht Lotte Lenya, Wilhelm Brückner-Rüggeberg
Overture, Scherzo & Finale, Op. 56 Robert Schumann John Eliot Gardiner Orchestre Revolutionaire et Romantique

and there will be much more tomorrow!!!
