Afternoon Classics, Tuesday, June 15, 2010

Today is an all Grieg day as we celebrate his birthday. Always a highly popular composer most of his works are familiar to all of us. There are a few which fly under the radar though and we will see if we can spot one or two.

Here is one that is not often heard but is tremendously beautiful: Sonata No. 3 in C minor for violin & piano, Op. 45 Edvard Grieg Wanda Wilkomirska - violin; Antonio Barbosa - piano .
This is rarely heard but has a lot of "typical Grieg" about it: String Quartet No. 1 in G minor, Op. 27 Edvard Grieg Chilingirian Quartet
Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 16 Edvard Grieg Leif Ove Andsnes - piano; Dmitri Kityenko Bergen Philharmonic
Four Lyric pieces, Op 68 &7 Edvard Grieg Emil Gillels - piano
Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, Op. 46 Edvard Grieg Raymond Leppard Philharmonia Orchestra
Holberg Suite, Op. 40 Edvard Grieg Raymond Leppard Philharmonia Orchestra
Two Norwegian dances, Op. 35 Edvard Grieg Neeme Järvi Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra
The only other Norwegian composer I could find! Concerto No. 1 for Hardanger Fiddle, Op. 163 Geirr Tveitt Arve Moen Bergset - fiddle; Ole Kristian Ruud Stavanger Symphony Orchestra
Three Songs from 3 Penny Opera Kurt Weill/Bertolt Brecht Ute Lemper - vocal, John Mauceri RIAS Berlin
