A Little Bit of Broadway
A long time ago, Broadway would produce a musical, which Hollywood would buy the rights and make a movie. Often that movie bore no resemblance to the Broadway show, but hey, whatever, right? However, with the exception of the 1974 flop Gigi, Broadway never borrowed from Hollywood. That changed in 1980, some folks got together and adapted Busby Berkeley’s lively backstage musical, 42nd Street, for the Broadway stage. It’s your basic young girl from the hicks comes to Broadway to become a star, has lots of trials and tribulations, but in the end gets the role and stardom.

A Little Bit of Broadway
Act 2
Last week we listened to Act 1 of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s latest musical. He has stated that "What I think is that Love Never Dies is a completely standalone musical that just happens to have the same four characters as the Phantom." (3/10/2010 CNN)
Well, it still sounds like a sequel to me. It’s scheduled to open at the Neil Simon Theater on Broadway this fall.

Once upon a time, there was a Cuban band leader called Desi who married a redheaded comedienne called Lucy and they had a family. Now, many years later the daughter, after singing on Broadway and at Vegas and in cabarets and clubs, has recorded a tribute album to her visionary father. Here’s Lucie Desiree Arnaz y de Ball, singing songs that show her Latin Roots.

A Little Bit of Broadway
Act 1
It is ten year after The Phantom of the Opera, and the location is moved to Coney Island, but the people are the same. Opening last Tuesday, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s latest is the story of “what happens next” after the end of his mega hit Phantom. It has opened to very mixed reviews and it’s anticipated that it will undergo revision before coming to Broadway. I won’t tell you the story, but let you judge for yourself if it “lacks drama”, “is insipid”, “predictable”.
Act One is this week, with Act 2 next week.

A Little Bit of Broadway
1975
Well, composer Jack Beeson joined up with librettist Sheldon Harnick, and they turned Clyde Fitch’s 1870’s hit Captain Jinks of the Horse Marines into an operetta. Well, maybe even opera. It sounds very much like the operas written in the last half of the last century. But it stays true to the silly 1870’s plot, where 2 young men make a bet that Captain Jinks can seduce the newest opera singer to come to the American shows. Complications start when he starts falling in love with her and trys to get out of the bet.
Written for the Kansas City Lyric Theater
Colonel Mapleson: Eugene Green
Jinks: Robert Owen Johnson
Willie: Brian Steele
Charlie: Ronald Highley
Aurelia: Carol Wilcox
