A Little Bit of Broadway
The Civil War
8/29/2010
This show is not really a typical revue – there isn’t really a structured plot but a series of songs which tell the story of the war through Union, Confederate, and slave viewpoints. Critics for the most part didn’t like it, but that seems more for the unstructured nature, not the music, which ranges from country to rock to folk to gospel. Some of the numbers make you want to dance, while others tug at your heartstrings.
The original recording features James Garner as President Lincoln, Danny Glover as Frederick Douglas, with Charlie Daniels, Hootie and the Blowfish, Travis Tritt, Michael Bell, Maya Angelou, Dr. John and lots others.

Hairspray
8/22/2010
A musical based on a movie which was then turned into a musical film? That’s today’s musical – Hairspray. The story of a teenager in 1962 Baltimore who wants to dance on tv, and more than that, thinks that the black teenagers ought to get to dance more than one “Negro Day” a month. Winning 8 Tony’s, 9 Drama Desk Awards, and 5 Olivier Awards, it certainly lives up to Ben Brantley’s review: 'Hairspray' is as sweet as a show can be without promoting tooth decay…”

A Little Bit of Broadway
Annie Get Your Gun
It’s a beautiful sunny summer afternoon so let’s listen to an old friend, full of music we can sing along with. We are listening this afternoon to the 1999 revival cast recording of Irving Berlin’s 1946 hit, Annie Get Your Gun. This fictionalized “biopic” of the real-life sharpshooter Annie Oakley and her husband Frank Butler, is one of Berlin’s most enduring classics.
Music Irving Berlin

Book Herbert Fields, Dorothy Fields
1999 Revival cast recording
Annie: Bernadette Peters
Frank: Tom Wopat
To keep our “country” feel, here’s music from Lone Star Love, a Texas setting of Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor.

A Little Bit of Broadway
The Sound of Music
(1959)
Both Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II had successful Broadway careers before they joined forces. Rodgers provided the music for some of Lorenz Hart’s wittiest lyrics (A Connecticut Yankee, Babes in Arms, I Married an Angel, The Boys from Syracuse, Pal Joey) while Hammerstein wrote lyrics for some of the best of operetta (Show Boat, Rose Marie, The Desert Song, The New Moon). Their partnership changed the direction of American musical theater and gave us some undisputed masterpieces (Oklahoma!, Carousel, Allegro, South Pacific, The King and I, Me & Juliet, Pipe Dream, Flower Drum Song, and The Sound of Music, as well as the musical film State Fair, and the television musical Cinderella).
The Sound of Music, their last show, has some of their most classic songs, including "The Sound of Music", "Edelweiss", "My Favorite Things", "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" and "Do-Re-Mi".
This was the last show of the duo, as Hammerstein died 9 months after the show opened. The very last song he wrote was Edelweiss.
We are listening to the 1997 Tony nominated revival cast recording.

A Little Bit of Broadway
This morning at church someone asked me what I was going to play this afternoon. When I replied I hadn’t decided yet, one of the teenagers said to play something about teenagers. Well, that brings up several choices! And they are all good
We will start with Bye, Bye, Birdie, inspired by the the King of Rocka nd Roll's, popular singer Elvis Presley, 1958 draft notice.
Cool tidbit: The rock star character's name, "Conrad Birdie," is word play on the name of Conway Twitty. Twitty is best remembered today for his long career as a country music star, but before that, in the late 1950s, he was one of Presley's rock 'n' roll rivals.
Act 1
Overture
An English Teacher – Rosie & Albert
The Telephone Hour – Teenagers
How Lovely to Be a Woman – Kim
Put on a Happy Face – Albert
A Healthy, Normal, American Boy – The Company
One Boy – Kim, Deborah Sue, Alice
Honestly Sincere – Conrad Birdie, Ursula, and Teenagers
Hymn for a Sunday Evening – The MacAfee Family & Company
One Last Kiss – Conrad & Company
Act II
What Did I Ever See in Him? – Rosie & Kim
A Lot of Livin’ to Do – Conrad, Kim & Teenagers
Kids – Mr. and Mrs. MacAfee
Baby, Talk to Me – Albert & Quartet
Kids (Reprise) – Adults, Mr & Mrs Macafee, Randolph
Spanish Rose – Rosie
Rosie – Rosie & Albert
Music: Charles Strouse
Lyrics: Lee Adams
Book: Michael Stewart
Original cast
Albert Peterson – Dick Van Dyke
Rosie Alvarez – Chita Rivera
Conrad Birdie – Dick Gautier
Kim MacAfee – Susan Watson
Mr. MacAfee – Paul Lynde
Mrs. MacAfee – Marijane Maricle
Mrs. Mae Peterson – Kay Medford
Hugo Peabody – Michael J. Pollard
Mr. Henkel – Charles Nelson Reilly
The other classic “teenage” musical is set in 1959. Grease follows ten working-class kids as they navigate the complexities of love, cars, and drive-ins. The score attempts to re-create the sounds of early rock and roll although it has been smoothed out as it has evolved over the years. A lot of the smoothed out happened with the movie. Many of the songs written for the movie have found their way into the stage score.
