A Little Bit of Broadway

Golden Boy of the Blue Ridge
2009

Take The Playboy of the Western World , a 1907 three-act play written by Irish playwright John Millington Synge, move it from the turn of the 20th century Ireland and place it during the Great Depression along the Blue Ridge and you have Golden Boy of the Blue Ridge.

Clayton is on the run for having murdered his father by hitting him with a shovel. He shows up at Maggie’s grocery store and the residents react in ways we don’t exactly expect. However, when his father shows up, not dead at all, the reactions are again not you expect.

The bluegrass-tinged score is lots of fun – the critics pretty much universally liked Frank Mills's music. They weren’t as kind to the adaption of the play, which most felt dealt only with the comedy aspects and seemed rushed to the stage. And many mentioned the homespun dialect and dialogue seemed out of place and silly.

A Little Bit of Broadway

Aladdin
(1992)

Somehow, sunny days and Disney just seems to go together. On this sunny Sunday afternoon, we are listening to Aladdin, Disney’s retelling of one of the more familiar tales from One Thousand and One Nights. Alan Menken wrote the music, with lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, who finished the score after Ashman’s death.

It was highly successful, in fact the most successful film of 1992. It won 2 Academy awards for Best Score and Best Song, has sequels, video games, and several stage adaptations.

But the mysterious Middle East has been the vehicle for many shows throughout the years. In 1925, Otto Harbach and Sigmund Romberg wrote The Desert Song, set in Arab North Africa. This was a hot location in the twenties, due to films like The Sheik, Son of the Sheik and Beau Geste. It’s your classic boy has hidden swashbuckling identify, who the girl likes better than his “mild-mannered” persona.

The Desert Song –Kitty Carlisle and Wilbur Evans (1944)
Eastern and Western Love – Nelson Eddy, Wesley Dalton, Lee Cass and Ensemble (1953)

Kismet is one of my all-time favorite musicals. Written in 1953 by Robert Wright and George Forrest, adapted from the music of Alexander Borodin, it is full of wonderful Edwardian claptrap and unbelievable situations, and of course ends happily every after. Except for the wicked Wazir. Something in common with Aladdin!

(1955 film)
Fate – Howard Keel
Not since Nineveh – Dolores Gray
Stranger in Paradise – Ann Blyth, Vic Damone

A Little Bit of Broadway

Movin' Out

Is it a truly a musical or is it a ballet? That’s the big debate over the 2002 Movin' Out, using the music of Billy Joel to create an evening of dance. And dance they do – Brenda and Eddie, James, Judy and Tony, all the while a rock band overhead plays Joel’s music. It did OK – nominated for 7 Tony’s with Twyla Tharp winning for best choreography. If you like dance, you’ll like this musical. If you want a traditional musical, this isn’t it. But listening to the music is alwaya a pleasure.

Host - Mary Watson

We have a special program today. Mary Watson, pianist extraordinaire, will be talking about the Alaska Music Trail, a program founded by Maxim Schapiro and avidly supported by then-Gov. Ernest Gruening, that brought major musicians, as well as actors, dancers and other well-known performers - many of them international famous - to 18 Alaskan and 6 Canadian cities between 1950 and 1970. Each year brought 3 or 4 such stars. Mary has selected pieces performed by several of these trailblazers for today's show, and has interesting stories about many of them.
