A Little Bit of Broadway

With over 500 costumes, and with so much glitter and sequins that I am surprised they left any in New York, it’s no wonder Priscilla, Queen of the Desert has received a Tony nomination for Best Costumes. In listening to this original cast recording, I must admit I kept looking for the mirrored disco ball. With covers of music original made hits by disco greats like Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor and the Village People, the music is certainly infectious. I defy you not to want to dance while listening this story of travel and discovery in the Australian Outback.

Nominated for 2 Tony Awards:
Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical: Tony Sheldon
Best Costume Design of a Musical: Tim Chappel & Lizzy Gardiner

Music: Various
Lyrics: Various
Book: Stephan Elliott and Allan Scott
Basis: Stephan Elliott's 1994 motion picture The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown is based on Pedro Almodovar's 1988 film of the same title. Set in Madrid in the late 20th century, the show covers 48 hours in the life of group of women whose relationship with the men in teir lives isn’t always the smoothest.

Nominated for 3 Tony Awards:
Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre: Music & Lyrics: David Yazbek
Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical: Laura Benanti
Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical: Patti LuPone

Music: David Yazbek
Lyrics: David Yazbek
Book: Jeffrey Lane
Basis: Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown by Pedro Almodóvar

A Little Bit of Broadway

Sister Act

We have 21 days until the Tony Awards ceremony, and from now until then, A Little Bit of Broadway will be playing music from the nominated musicals. This week, it’s Sister Act. Nominated for 5 awards, including Best Musical, Sister Act is based on the 1992 Whoopi Goldberg movie of the same name. Disco Diva Deloris has seen a mob killing and is fleeing for her life. The police put her into protective custody by making her Sister Mary Clarence and hiding her in a convent. But Deloris takes over the choir, makes a splash and mobster boyfriend Shank finds her and invades the convent to get rid of her. Of course, everything ends happily, after all it is a comedy.

Find out more about the Tony nominated musicals at the Tony Awards website, where you can even see clips of the nominated shows.

The Lake Isle of Innisfree
By William Butler Yeats
I WILL arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made;
Nine bean rows will I have there, a hive for the honey bee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.
And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings;
There midnight’s all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
And evening full of the linnet’s wings.
I will arise and go now, for always night and day
I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore;
While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements gray,
I hear it in the deep heart’s core.

A Little Bit of Broadway

I Remember Mama

First it was a memoir by Kathryn Forbes called Mama’s Bank Account. In 1944 it became a Broadway show (with Marlon Brandon in his Broadway debut as Nels). In 1948 it became a film (with Irene Dunne as Mama).In 1949 it moved to TV (as Mama) and ran until 1957. In 1979 it finally became a musical. It didn’t do as well as the previous incarnations, but was finally recorded in 1986 so we have Richard Rodgers ‘last show to listen to this afternoon.

Each version is pretty much the same – a family a family of Norwegian immigrants living in San Francisco in the early 20th Century. All the versions were described as “heartwarming” and “charming”.

Playwright, stage director and screenwriter Arthur Laurents died this week at the age of 93. His screen credits include Alfred Hitchcock’s The Rope, The Way we were with Barbra Streisand and The Turning Point. Broadway credits include Gypsy (both book and direction) West Side Story, Hallelujah Baby and La Cage aux folle. He kept busy until the end, with one of his last projects being the multilingual redo of West Side Story.
