A Liitle Bit of Broadway

Sunday, August 28, 2011
4:30pm - 6:00 pm

Disney's Aladdin

Disney has been pretty successful with transferring some of their later musical animated features from the silver screen to Broadway. The latest that has worked its way toward the stage is Aladdin. With music by Alan Menkin and lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, the story of the common street boy whose whole world changes because he rubs a lamp is beloved around the world. The film version features the voices of Bruce Adler, Jonathan Freeman, Brad Kane, Lea Salonga and Robin Williams. The stage version made its debut in Seattle last month, and is now available for anyone to perform!

Let’s stay in the mysterious Middle East for the remainder of the show and listen to music from one of my top five musicals – Kismet. This is the film version with Howard Keel as the Beggar, Deloris Gray as the Lalume, Ann Blyth as Marsinah and Vic Damone as the Caliph.

A Little Bit of Broadway

Sunday, August 14, 2011 -- 4:30 - 6pm

The world of musical theater continues to borrow from the silver screen with today’s offering – Ghost, the Musical. Based on the 1990 movie, it’s the story of the love between Sam and Molly that doesn’t die just because Sam happens to be killed. Sam becomes a ghost, determined to protect Molly from the man who killed him. He does this with the help of a medium Oda Mae Brown, who is less of a fake than she thought she was.

Book and lyrics are by Bruce Joel Rubin, who wrote the original screenplay, and music is by Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics and Glen Ballard, a songwriter and producer who produced such albums as Michael Jackson’s Thriller and wrote the Grammy winning Believe (The Polar Express).

There is one song from the movie – it would impossible to imagine this show without Unchained Melody.

It’s currently playing on the West End, but I hope that it comes soon to the States.

You can see numbers from the show on Youtube.

A Little Bit of Broadway

Baby, it's You!

Currently playing on Broadway, Baby, it’s You tells the story of how a New Jersey housewife changed the way Americans listened to music. Florence Greenberg signed first the Shirelles, the first girl group to get a Billboard #1 record. Her record label, Spector Records, signed such musicans as The Kingsmen, The Isley Brothers and Dionne Warwick.

Today’s music celebrates that music from the early 1960’s. If you want to see the show on Broadway, go soon; it closes after Labor Day weekend.
