A Little Bit of Broadway
Mamma Mia!
It’s been cold, so very, very cold, and although I have several new shows to play, most of them are depressing and I just can’t take depressing in this cold windy weather. So I went looking for tropical musicals. I ended up in Greece. Mamma Mia is a jukebox musical, with the plot structured to fit the songs. And what songs! The music of ABBA defines a generation, and you just can’t not dance when you hear it.
Today we are listening to the 1999 Broadway cast recording. There are differences from the film version. Mostly the songs are in different places, as the movie changed the plot slightly.
So let’s dance, keep warm, and enjoy Mamma Mia!
Music Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson

A Little Bit of Broadway
Gypsy
There’s new biography of Gypsy Rose Lee. Karen Abbott has written a book about this extraordinary entertainer. Her book is: "American Rose: A Nation Laid Bare, The Life and Times of Gypsy Rose Lee." You can hear or read the interview Scott Simon did with the author yesterday on Weekend Edition. I particularly liked his intro: To say that Gypsy Rose Lee was a stripper is a bit like calling Frank Sinatra a saloon singer.
So today we are listening to Gypsy, the story of how Louise became Gypsy Rose Lee. This is the original cast recording, with Ethel Merman as Mama Rose, Jack Klugman as Herbie, Lane Bradbury as June (who became June Havoc) and Sandra Church as Louise.
Based on: Gypsy: A Memoir by Gypsy Rose Lee
Book: Arthur Laurents
Music: Jule Styne
Lyrics: Stephen Sondheim

A Little Bit of Broadway
January 2, 2011
Due to the extended Metropolitan Opera presentation, it was truly a little bit of Braodway; the abbreviated show featured selections from Forbidden Broadway, the Off-Broadway revue created, written, and directed by Gerard Alessandrini. The orginal version of the revue opened on January 15, 1982 and ran for 2,332 performances. To date, the show in various editions has played over 9,000 performances, and has toured over 200 American cities as well as London, Tokyo, Singapore and Sydney. In 2006, the show and Alessandrini were awarded Tony Honors for Excellence in Theatre.
Forbidden Broadway Volume 2: The Rain in Spain; America/Chita-Rita; More Miserable Sequence
Forbidden Broadway Volume 3: Return to Merman and Martin; You Got Trouble
Forbidden Broadway Strikes Back: Ethel Merman and Sunset Boulevard; Be Depressed
Forbidden Broadway Special Victims Unit: Wickeder
