A Little Bit of Broadway 4:30 - 6:00 pm

We have been spending a lot of time with this year’s batch of Tony nominated shows lately, so it’s time to listen to one that not only didn’t receive a Tony nomination, but didn’t even last a month. Everyone has to have a flop. Rodgers and Hammerstein had Allegro, Stephen Sondheim had Anyone Can Whistle, and Frank Wildhorn now has Wonderland, a very convoluted contemporary updating of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Most of the critics hated the storyline, calling it messy, confusing, and unemotional. Other critics called the music “competent.” The show was one of the few new musicals to fail to receive a nomination for any major theatre awards.

However, on the bright side, on closing night Darren Ritchie (The White Knight) proposed to Janet Dascal (Alice) on stage. She accepted.

Music: Frank Wildhorn
Lyrics: Jack Murphy
Book: Jack Murphy and Gregory Boyd
Basis: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass

For a long time, Linda Eder was married to Frank Wildhorn. About 6 years ago, they had a parting of the ways, but this year Ms. Eder has released a recording of songs of songs by her former husband. The album is called Now. We’ll listen to:
Now gonna fall this time (lyrics by Jack Murphy)
No finer man (lyrics by Leslie Bricuse - from Cyrano de Bergerac)
Ordinary people
(lyrics by Brenda Russell)
Now (lyrics by Mayrt Yeston)

Patti Lupone is currently featured in a filmed concert version of Stephen Sondheim's "Company," also starring Tony Awards host Neil Patrick Harris.
""Side by Side By Side/What Would We Do Without You?" "Sorry/Grateful" "Being Alive" from Company

Norbert Leo Butz, winner for Catch Me If You Can originated the role of Fiyero in Wicked
"As Long As You're Mine" from Wicked

I also included readings/selections from the book "Making it On Broadway: Actor's Tales of Climbing to the Top" by David Weinir and Jodie Langel (Allworth Press, NY 2004)...reflections by actors of being nominated and/or winning a Tony. One story was by Charlotte d'Amboise, nominated for Jerome Robbins Broadway...eight years passed between that nomination and her second, for the role of Cassie in the 2007 revival of A Chorus Line. The audition/casting process for that revival is recorded in an amazing documentary "Every Little Step."

"The Music and the Mirror" and "What I Did For Love" from the original A Chorus Line

A Little Bit of Broadway

We continue our look at Tony nominated showwith one that is nominated for Best Musical, and the other Best Revival of a Musical.

The Book of Mormon

Take 2 young Mormon missioners – one insecure and inept, the other overconfident and pompous. They head off to Africa on their mission, and find they learn more from the Ugandans then they teach the Africans.
Book, music and lyrics are by Trey Parker, Matt Stone, and Robert Lopez. Parker and Stone are best known for creating the animated comedy South Park Lopez co-wrote and co-composed Avenue Q.
