Knickerbocker Holiday

In 1938, composer Kurt Weill (recently moved to New York after escaping from Nazi Germany) joined forces with American playwright, author, poet, journalist and lyricist Maxwell Anderson. Together, they wrote a show that is part romantic comedy and part political satire. Washington Irving’s Knickerbocker Stories was the basis of the story of the last Dutch Governor of New Amsterdam and his grab for power (a thinly disguised comment on FDR, whom Anderson despised), and the love story of Tina and Brom.

Knickerbocker Holiday hasn’t been fully recorded until now (a few recordings of Walter Huston have survived). September Song has been recorded by just about everyone from Frank Sinatra to James Brown to Ronnie Drew and is considered a pop standard. This new recording of the show was made in January of this year, with the Collegiate Chorale and the American Symphony Orchestra. Victor Garber, Kelli O’Hara, David Garrison and Ben Davis play the leading roles.

A Little Bit of Broadway 7/3/11 4:30 - 6:00 pm

Million Dollar Quartet

In 1956 Rock and Roll Greats Cal Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley met and jammed together for the first and only time. The recordings of that jam session came to be called the Million Dollar Quartet. In 2010, Broadway was introduced to the music of those 4 legendary performers. The musical was called, appropriately, Million Dollar Quartet.

Nominated for three Tony’s (Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Featured Performer in a Musical), Levi Kreis won the Tony for his performance of Jerry Lee Lewis.

The show closed last month after a year on Broadway, but transferred to an Off-Broadway theater this month. It starts its National Tour this fall, so watch for it!

Music: Various
Arranged by: Chuck Mead
Lyrics: Various
Book: Floyd Mutrux and Colin Escott

Cal Perkins: Robert Lyons
Jerry Lee Lewis: Levi Kreis
Johnny Cash: Lance Guest
Elvis Presley: Eddie Clendening
Dyanne (Elvis’ girlfriend): Elizabeth Stanley
Sam Phillips: Hunter Foster

We'll have a few minutes left, so let's listen to one of the classic singers of the period -- Kate Smith.
