A Little Bit of Broadway

Sunday, September 25, 2011
4:30 - 6:00 pm

Lend Me a Tenor

It’s 1934 and the world’s greatest tenor is scheduled to open the Cleveland Grand Opera Company’s 50th anniversary season as the lead in Verdi’s Otello. However, things don’t go quite as planned for El Stupendo, and especially as the opera company’s long-suffering assistant (and would be tenor) Max. Rapid exits, mistaken identity (some inadvertent, others not) and lots of opera jokes abound in today’s show.

Lend Me a Tenor opened on the West End in June and closed in August. Reviews were pretty good but it just didn’t seem to develop the kind of following the play it is based on has developed. But the play is delightful and so is the music for this incarnation.

Music: Brad Carroll
Lyrics: Peter Sham
Book: Peter Sham
Basis: 1986 play Lend Me a Tenor by Ken Ludwig

And just because, here's tenor Placido Domingo singing Grenada to finish the show! Don't miss Great Performances Monday night, when Domingo talks about his favorite roles.

A Little Bit of Broadway

Sunday, September 18, 2011
4:30 - 6:00 pm

Gigi

It’s a Paris kind of day – so we start with the 1973 Broadway version of Lerner and Loewe’s 1958 film classic, Gigi. Taking place around the turn of the last century, Gigi tells the story of a young girl who captures the love of the bon vivant bachelor Gaston Lachaille.

It’s only played for 103 performances, but won the Tony for best musical score. It’s hard when your source material is one of the classic film musicals.

Music: Frederick Loewe
Lyrics: Alan Jay Lerner
Book: Alan Jay Lerner
Basis: Novel by Colette

We’ll stay in Paris with another Broadway musical based on a film. Victor, Victoria is set in Paris in the Roaring 20’s, when an unemployed soprano (Victoria) pretends to be a Polish count (Victor) who is a female impersonator.

Music: Henry Mancini and Frank Wildhorn
Lyrics: Leslie Bricusse and Frank Wildhorn
Book: Blake Edwards
Basis: 1982 film Victor Victoria, which was a remake of the German film comedy Viktor und Viktoria shot by Reinhold Schünzel in 1933 from his own script.

A Little Bit of Broadway

Rock of Ages
Sunday, September 11, 2011
4:30 - 6:00 pm

It’s a jukebox musical kind of afternoon. We’re listening to Rock of Ages, which has a story designed to showcase the glam rock music of the 1980’s. The original cast recording has program notes by the writer of the book, Chris D'Arienzo, titled “The Creation of Rock of Ages, the Greatest Piece of Musical Theater since Showboat (or How I Inadvertently Tried to Destroy Broadway forever.)”

The songs are listed below with the original band name afterward. The show was named for Def Leppard’s single Rock of Ages, but the owner of the license wouldn’t let them use the song.

Act I
• "Just Like Paradise/Nothin' but a Good Time" - David Roth Roth/Poison
• "Sister Christian" - Night Ranger

A Little Bit of Broadway

Sunday, September 4, 2011
4:00 - 6:00 pm

Camelot

It’s a classic today. Lerner and Loewe followed their “practically perfect’ musical My Fair Lady with the story of a young king whose queen falls in love with his best friend, and in doing so, destroys a nation and a dream.

Camelot, based on T.H. White’s The Once and Future King, didn’t meet with immediate critical success. After all, how do the follow up something like My Fair Lady? But Camelot ran on Broadway for 873 performances, winning four Tony Awards and spawning several revivals, foreign productions and a 1967 film version and a 1982 HBO special. The original cast album was America's top-selling LP for 60 weeks.

We are listening to the original cast recording this afternoon.

Music Frederick Loewe
Lyrics Alan Jay Lerner
Book Alan Jay Lerner
Basis The Once and Future King by T. H. White

King Arthur – Richard Burton
Queen Guenevere – Julie Andrews
Sir Lancelot – Robert Goulet
Knights: Robert Coote, John Cullum, Bruce Yarnell
Mordred – Roddy McDowall
Nimue – Mary Sue Berry

We have a few minutes, so we'll listen to some songs from that “practically perfect’ musical My Fair Lady.
