A Little Bit of Broadway with Sue B
October 30, 2011
On a cold, wet, windy day, you are invited into the imagination of Don Quixote as we celebrate The Man of la Mancha.

Orginal 1965 production ran for 2, 328 performances and won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
Cervantes/Don Quixote - Richard Kiley
Sancho - Irving Jacobson
Innkeeper- Ray Middleton
The Padre - Robert Rounseville
Aldzona/Dulcinea -Joan Diener

Book by Dale Wasserman, Lyrics by Joe Darion and Music by Mitch Leigh.
The score was unusual in its time, because the orchestra had no stringed instruments, other than a double bass...it used brass, woodwinds, percussion and flamenco guitars.

Richard Kiley was a celebrated stage, television and film actor. He won three Emmy awards, two Golden Globe and two Tony Awards during his career. When he died in 1999, the lights on Braodway were turned off in his honor.

He also originated the role of the Caliph in "Kismet," from which we heard three selections: Stranger in Paradise, This is My Beloved, and Rhymes Have I.

Death Takes a Holiday
2011

In 1924, Alberto Casella wrote the play La Morte in Vacanza, which was translated and adapted in 1929 by Walter Ferris and called Death Takes a Holiday. Frederick March starred in the 1934 film, with a remake in 1998 as Meet Joe Black, starring Brad Pitt. Now it becomes a musical, with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston, and the book was adapted from the film by Peter Stone, continued after his death with Thomas Meehan.

It is 1921 and the Lamberti’s have been celebrating the engagement of their daugther Grazia. There is a car crash, and Grazia is thrown from the car but is unhurt. Later that night, Death pays a visit to the Duke, saying he has taken the body of the young Russian Prince Nilolai Sirki. He wants to learn what is it about human life that has people clinging to it so hard and have such a fear of death.

The show opened off-Broadway in June 2011 for a limited run through September 4. Reviews were fairly favorable.

Music and Lyrics: Maury Yeston
Book: Peter Stone, Thomas Meehan

A Little Bit of Broadway

Sunday, October 16, 2011
4:30 - 6:00 pm

A Little Princess

A Little Princess is the story of a little girl with a great big imagination. Separated from her father, and the open-hearted Africans who have helped him raise her, young Sara Crewe is sent to boarding school in London. When things go badly for her there, her imaginative powers come to the rescue – helping to transform a drab institution into a place of magic and mystery. As the girl wins the affection of the other boarders she draws the ire of Miss Minchin, the dour headmistress; Sara is made a servant to the institution when her father is reported dead, and his fortune seized. Sara counters all Miss Minchin’s best efforts to degrade her with the grace and virtue of a little princess.

We are listening this afternoon to the concept CD but if you want to hear more, Texas State University will be performing a concert version Oct 16-19 at the Texas Music Theater in San Marcos, TX. The final performance will be streamed live on the web for audiences across the country on Oct 19th.

Book and Lyrics: Brian Crawley
Music: Andrew Lippa
Based on: A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett

One of the best on Broadway for years has to be Barbara Cook. She originated so many of the best roles on the stage – Laurey, Julie, Marian – and saw the film roles go to Shirley Jones. She just released a new recording, titled You Make Me Feel So Young.

Last night, PBS aired the Guthrie reimagining of Gilbert & Sullivan's classic operetta H.M.S. Pinafore. Who saw it? What did you think? let me know!

This morning on Crosscurrents we listened back to a lot of great brassy- funky- rockin' tunes from the sixties and seventies. We listened to a string of songs made famous by Buddy Holly, performed by him and others, and American Pie, written and performed by Don McLean inspired by the death of Buddy Holly. One lucky listener also won a pair of free tickets to this Sunday's performance of Te Vaca for knowing that Don McLean wrote American Pie! Isn't public radio fantastic?

A Little Bit of Broadway

Anything Goes
2011 Revivial Cast

In 1934, Cole Porter wrote one of the best Broadway musicals of all time. Anything Goes is very 1930’s musical theater – complete with amazing tap numbers, campy jokes, unlikely happy endings and eminently hummable songs. It’s been filmed (twice), is a popular musical for schools and community theater, and has been revived several times. The most recent revival is currently on Broadway, wowing folks with a crew of singing sailors, some exotic disguises and some good old-fashioned blackmail. So let’s board the S.S. American as she sets sail for England, and join the 2011 Tony Award winning cast for Anything Goes.

Music and Lyrics: Cole Porter
Book: Guy Bolton, P.G. Wodehouse

Reno Sweeney: Sutton Foster
Moonface Martin: Joel Grey
Evangeline Harcourt :Kelly Bishop
Elisha Whitney: John McMartin
Billy Crocker: Colin Donnell

Half -Past Wednesday

Around the 1960’s there was a burst of musicals from fairytales – and one that only lasted 2 performances is the one we are listening to today. Half-Past Wednesday is the musical version of the Grimm fairytale Rumpelstiltskin. The 5 person cast told the story of a miller who makes a boast his daughter can spin straw into gold, unknowing that the king is very greedy. The daughter does it, with the help of a little green man who makes her a bargain – he’ll do it if she gives him her first born. She finally agrees, and goes on to marry the prince. Then the little man comes back to complete the bargain.

Who knows why it only lasted 2 performances, (April 6 and 7, 1962). But it was an early appearance of Dom DeLuise and, while it’s obviously not a lost classic (it doesn’t even have a wiki page), nevertheless, it’s a fun way to spend the afternoon.
Music: Robert Colby
Lyrics: Robert Colby, Nita Jonas
Book: Anna Marie Barlow
Basis: Brothers Grimm Rumpelstiltskin

Cinderella
A better known treatment of a fairytale is Rodgers and Hammerstein’s treatment of Cinderella. The story of the daughter of house, reduced to slaving away for her stepmother and stepsisters, was seen first on CBS TV in 1957. We are listening to the second TV production starring Stuart Damn and Lesley Ann Warren.

Once Upon a Mattress
Take the fairytale The Princess and the Pea, add in such wonderful entertainers as Carol Burnet and you have a delightful retelling of the story of a Queen who refuses to let her son get married. How does he succeed in winning a bride? That's what 1959's Once Upon a Mattress tells, with music by Mary Rodgers and lyrics by Marshall Barer.
