A Little Bit of Broadway

Sunday, November 27, 2011
4:30-6:00 pm

South Pacific
It’s another cold Sunday, so it’s time to go somewhere warm, at least for the next 90 minutes. Today we will join Rodgers and Hammerstein in South Pacific, one of the greatest musicals of all time. Filled with classic songs, it tells the story of 2 couples during World War II, and how racial prejudice causes problems between both couples. One couple ends up with a happy ending, the other does not.

This musical has won so many awards, it would take pages to list them all. It has been filmed, revived, and done everywhere from Broadway to high schools.

We are listening to the 2005 concert version, with Reba McEntire as Nellie Forbush, Brian Stokes Mitchell as Emile, Alec Baldwin as Luther Billis and Lillias White as Bloody Mary.

A Little Bit of Broadway

Sunday, November 20, 2011

Guys and Dolls
It’s so cold today that we need something fun to help keep up warm. And the 1950 Frank Loesser’s musical setting of the stories of Damon Runyon certainly fits the bill. We are in New York, and Nathan Detroit, who runs the local oldest established permanent floating crap game in New York is broke and can’t find anywhere to hold the game. And there are lots of big rollers in town, including Sky Masterson. How Nathan gets his money and a location to hold the game, and how Sky falls in love with the Save a Soul Mission Sgt Sarah Brown is what Guys and Dolls is all about.

Another Broadway show from the 1950’s set in New York City is very different. Here’s music from the 2009 revival of West Side Story, in which many of the songs sung by the Puerto Ricans are sung in Spanish.

A Little Bit of Broadway

Sunday, November 13, 2011

In 1985, an Off-Broadway show debuted that became the second longest running off-Broadway show ever. It starred the five remaining sisters of The Little Sisters of Hoboken (the rest died when Sister Julia Child of God accidentally poisoned the rest with tainted vichyssoise.) They have buried every one of those poor sisters except four, and in order to raise the money, they do what everyone does -- they put on a show!

Music, Lyrics and Book by Dan Goggin

A Little Bit of Broadway

Sunday, November 6, 2011
4:30-6:00 pm

Jonathan Harker, a young lawyer from England, travels to Transylvania in order to fix a deal with Count Dracula, who wants to buy a home in London. This simple premise starts off that very first of the modern vampires in Irish author Bram Stoker’s Dracula. And composer Frank Wildhorn, with lyricists Don Black and Christopher Hampton, has made Dracula sing in their 2001 production of Dracula. It made its official Broadway debut in 2004 and the critics hated it, but then the critics seem to consistently hate Frank Wildhorn’s work. So we’ll ignore the critics and listen as Jonathan and Van Helsling fight for Mina’s life.

Music: Frank Wildhorn
Lyrics: Don Black and Christopher Hampton
Basis Dracula by Bram Stoker

Frank Wildhorn’s first big break was with his musical Jekyll and Hyde, based upon another frightening novel. Here’s a couple of songs from the concept album.

And to finish the time, here's the theme music for that most famous of the modern vampire hunters -- Buffy, the Vampire Slayer.
