A Little Bit of Broadway

The Tony Award for best musical in 1973 went to Raisin, a musical version of Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun. The story of the Younger Family played for almost 850 performances. Set in Chicago in 1951, the tension is between Mama's desire to move out of the ghetto and her son's desire to own his own liquor store. Who wins? -- attend Perserverance Theater's production of the play!

At the suggestion of a listener and coinciding with a recent series of talks in Juneau by mental health advocate Pete Earley, which were sponsored by the Juneau chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Health, this program featured some of classical music's best-known composers who are known to have experienced various mental health problems. Regardless of whether these composers wrote extraordinary music because of or in spite of their mental health issues, they have enriched our world beyond measure.

Composers' names and Rachmaninov's Symphony No. 1 are linked to resources that provide more information about their lives. In addition, the following article offers insight on the connections between mental illness and creativity.
