*Leon Levitch was born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. His early education was interrupted by the Nazi invasion of his country. His family managed to evade the Nazis for nine months by hiding in the mountains until they were captured by Mussolini's army and interned in northern Italy. A year-and-one-half later the family was transferred to a concentration camp in southern Italy. In 1944, the Levitch family was among a group of less than a thousand Jews rescued by the United States government. They were brought to the U.S. and interned in a camp at Oswego, N.Y. until the end of the War. They then entered the United States as refugees. In the internment camps, young Leon acquired the skills of piano tuning while devoting himself to composition and the study of music in general. Mr. Levitch completed his education in California. He studied piano with Jakob Gimpel and began studying at Los Angeles City College. Almost immediately he was drafted into the Army. Just before being shipped to Korea, it was discovered that he was really exempt from the draft because he had been in a concentration camp. He was honorably discharged and allowed to complete his education under the G.I. Bill. He continued his studies with Roy Harris at UCLA, but in 1967 he was in a terrible auto accident. While he was in the hospital, Harris came to his bed weekly to continue to teach him. For more than forty years Leon Levitch has supported himself and his family as a piano technician while pursuing his vocation as a composer. Source:

A Little Bit of Broadway

Easter Parade

The opera ran long, so we only have about a half an hour this afternoon. So why not take advantage of that, and play some of the best songs from the 1948 film musical Easter Parade. Don and Nadine have a successful dance act, but Nadine decides to go solo. Don declares that he can make a star from the next dancer he meets. That’s Hannah – and with lots of mix-ups and misunderstanding, Don and Hannah finally admit they are in love.

Judy Garland as Hannah Brown
Fred Astaire as Don Hewes
Peter Lawford as Jonathan Harrow III
Ann Miller as Nadine Hale
Music and Lyrics by Irving Berlin

Happy Easter
It only Happens when I Dance with You

A Little Bit of Broadway

Jesus Christ Superstar

Today is Palm Sunday, and so it seems very appropriate to listen to Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's rock opera based on the events of the last week of the life of Jesus. First released as a concept album in 1970, the work went on to play all over the world, been revived several times on Broadway and made into a film that even today, although made in 1973 and at times might seem a little dated, is still powerful to watch. We are listening to the film verson of Jesus Christ Superstar today, If you are in the area, the musical is currently playing on Broadway.

Ted Neeley as Jesus
Carl Anderson as Judas Iscariot
Yvonne Elliman as Mary Magdalene
Barry Dennen as Pontius Pilate
Bob Bingham as Caiaphas
Kurt Yaghjian as Annas
Josh Mostel as King Herod
Philip Toubus as Peter
Larry Marshall as Simon Zealotes
Richard Orbach as John
Robert LuPone as James
