A Little Bit of Broadway

The Pajama Game

American composer, lyrist, producer Richard Adler died last Thursday at the age of 90. Over his long career, Adler wrote for Broadway, TV and radio. His greatest success was with collaborator Jerry Ross, with whom he wrote the classics Pajama Game and Damn Yankees. I wonder what would have happened is Jerry Ross hadn’t died at age 29.
So, today we are listening to the original cast of Pajama Game, the story of love and union negotiations.

Music: Richard Adler and Jerry Ross
Lyrics: Richard Adler and Jerry Ross
Book: George Abbott and Richard Bissell
Basis: Novel 7-1/2 Cents by Richard Bissell
Tony Award for Best Musical 1955
Tony Award for Best Revivial of a Musical 2006

We have anough time to listen to some selctions from the other Adler and Ross classic.  Here's music from Damn Yankees. After all, everyone hates the New York Yankees, right?

Music: Richard Adler
Lyrics: Jerry Ross
Book: George Abbott and Douglass Wallop
Basis: The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant by Douglass Wallop
Tony Award for best Musical 1956

A Little Bit of Broadway

Porgy and Bess
2012 Revival

We continue listening to musicals nominated for Best Musical or Best revival of a musical.  Today’s it’s the Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. The powerful story of hard times of Catfish Row gets a darker, more spare setting, with Audra McDonald, Norm Lewis and David Alan Grier in the starring roles.
Find out more about the original opera, and about this year's Tony nominated production, which has had very mixed reviews between the traditionalists and those are aren't.
Tony Awards are next Sunday!
