A Little Bit of Broadway

Man of La Mancha

It’s an afternoon for a classic – and what a classic! Man of la Mancha is certainly one of the best loved of shows – winner of 5 Tony’s, including Best Musical. It’s been revived at least 4 times, and has been done all over the world (including Juneau Douglas Little Theatre).

We are listening to the 2003 revival cast this afternoon, with Brian Stokes Mitchell, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Ernie Sabella.

Saturday’s Morning Edition has an interesting interview with comedienne/actress Carol Burnett. Ms. Burnett made her Broadway debut as Fred in the original production of Once Upon a Mattress. We will listen to a 1971 TV special – Carol Burnett with Julie Andrews at Lincoln Center.

Starting tonight a 9pm, Julie Andrews hosts a six-hour celebration of the Broadway musical, from 1893 to 2004. Part 1 includes mini-profiles of George M. Cohan, Irving Berlin and Fanny Brice. Also featured: movie clips and color footage of “The Ziegfeld Follies.” Give My Regards to Broadway (1893-1927) - Broadway: The American Musical
