A Little Bit of Broadway

Sunday, February 19, 2012
4:30 - 6:00pm

The Boys from Syracuse

“If it’s good enough for Shakespeare…” Yes indeed, today’s musical is based on Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors tells the tale of 2 sets of identical twins, separated in childhood. One set of twins gets raises is Ephesus. The other gets raises in Syracuse. When the pair from Syracuse come to Ephesus, it’s a delightful time of mistaken identity, with the wonderful music of Richard Rodgers and witty lyrics of Lorenz Hart.

We are listening to the 1997 City Center Encores recording, with Malcolm Gets and Michael McGrath as the boys from Ephesus, and Mario Cantone and Davis Gaines as the boys from Syracuse.

Music Richard Rodgers
Lyrics Lorenz Hart
Book George Abbott
Basis William Shakespeare's play The Comedy of Errors

Lots of Broadway this week on television. Have you seen NBC’s Smash yet? This story of bringing the life of Marilyn Monroe to Broadway shows that is always more drama behind the scenes than on stage.

And this Saturday on Great Performances on PBS, it’s multi-Tony awarding winning Memphis - the story of a 1950’s disc jockey who falls in love with everything he shouldn’t: rock and roll and an electrifying black singer. Find out more as well as a sneak peak!

And don’t forget, JDHS is doing that other Shakespeare musical – Kiss Me Kate!

A Little Bit of Broadway

Sunday, Feruary 5, 2012
5:00 - 6:00pm

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

We are continuing our review of great film musicals (whether stage adaptations or film musical) that are fun to watch with younger kids. Today is the 1971 Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, a musical version of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. With great music, a moral lesson that’s not too heavy and Oompa Loompas, what better way than to spend time with the kids!

Screenplay: Roald Dahl, David Seltzer (uncredited)
Based on: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
Starring: Gene Wilder, Jack Albertson, Peter Ostrum
Music and lyrics: Anthony Newley, Leslie Bricusse

One bit of triva – Charlie Bucket was Peter Ostrum’s only film role. Today he is a large animal veterinarian in New York.

One of my favorite Newley/Bricusse shows is the 1963 Tony Award winning Stop the World - I Want to Get Off -- and who better to sing Little Chap than Sammy Davis, Jr. Here's some songs from the show.

NBC tomorrow night premieres a new series based on Broadway. Called Smash, it's the story of a group of characters who come together to put on a Broadway musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. Early buzz is that it's pretty good. Check it out!
