A Little Bit of Broadway
Newsies
In the summer of 1899, the publisher of the New York World, Joseph Pulitzer, increases the cost of the newspapers to the delivery boys in order to increase his bottom line. The delivery boys stage a strike – and this forms the story for the Disney musical Newsies.
Music Alan Menken
Lyrics Jack Feldman
Book Harvey Fierstein
Basis Newsies, 1992 film, screenplay by Bob Tzudiker & Noni White
Nominated for 8 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Newsies opened in March 2012 and rapidly became open-ended. So, if you are going to be in New York soon, you can see this!

June 10th is the date for the Tony Award winners to be announced. There are lots of wonderful musicals nominated this year, and over the next few weeks we will listen to as many as I can fit into the time allotted (and are released, which is actually the bigger problem.)

Once
Best revivial nominees are:
Evita
Jesus Christ Superstar
Follies
Porgy and Bess

Once
Today we are listening to Once, based on the 2006 indie movie of the same name. The guy and girl – he’s an irish street singer, she is an Czech immigrant, - meet, fall in love and yet go their separate ways in this bittersweet romance. It’s been nominated for11 Tony Awards.
To finish the time, having absolutely nothing to do with the Tonys, it's a rerelease of the 1962 concert at Carnegis Hall of Carol Burnet and Julie Andrews.

Rock of Ages
Rock of Ages
Coming to Anchorage later this year, and to movie screens everywhere, the jukebox music Rock of Ages is about the coming of age of Drew and Sherrie in 1987 Hollywood. Both want to be stars, and both find out that Hollywood isn’t exactly kind, but that sometimes the dreams you come in with aren't always the dreams you leave with, but they still rock. Especially since the score contain much great from the 1980’s – including Journey, Styx, Pat Benatar, Bon Jovi, Steve Perry . and more.

Titanic
Well, we missed the actual date of the 100th anniversary of the sinking of that unsinkable ship, the Titanic, but that doesn’t mean we can’t listen to the Tony award winning music. It starts with everyone excited to be on the maiden voyage of the White Star’s newest passenger ship. Before the voyage was over, over 1,500 perished in the cold waters of the northern Atlantic. This is a huge show, complete with the central character – the ship herself.
We’ll finish with the love theme from the James Cameron’s lavish film version of the event, which came out the same year. Here’s Celine Dion singing My Heart Will Go On.
