A Little Bit of Broadway

She Loves Me

I am playing one of my most favorite musicals this afternoon. She Loves Me is a perfect jewelbox of a show, where two people who work together and just don’t get along are actually pen pals and falling in love with each other through their letters.

The musical is an adaptation of the play Parfumerie by Hungarian playwright Miklos Laszlo. It’s been made into three movies:
1940 James Stewart-Margaret Sullavan film The Shop around the Corner
1949 Judy Garland-Van Johnson musical version In the Good Old Summertime.
1998 as the Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan feature You've Got Mail.
Music Jerry Bock
Lyrics Sheldon Harnick
Book Joe Masteroff
Basis Miklos Laszlo's play Parfumerie

We are listening to the original cast recording this afternoon, with Daniel Massey, Jack Cassidy and Barbara Cook.

A Little Bit of Broadway

Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas

One of the all-time favorites of the Classic Christmas animated specials is Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas. It was been made into an absolutely delightful music that is pretty faithful to the original. So we’ll spend the afternoon with The Grinch, his dog Max, and the citizens of Whosville.

Music Mel Marvin and Albert Hague
Lyrics Timothy Mason and Dr. Seuss
Book Timothy Mason
Basis How The Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss

This original cast recording has Patrick Page as The Grinch, John Cullum as Old Max, his dog (who serves as the narrator) and Abigail Shapiro as Cyndy Lou Who.

Mamma Mia!

When the weather first turns really cold, my mind starts dreaming of places where the blue skies mean warm weather. There’s islands in the Caribbean, Hawaii and Mexico and of course the South Pacific. But my favorite warm getaway spot is Greece. And that’s where we are going to today.

Mamma Mia! Is a jukebox music featuring the music of that super group ABBA. Plot is a bit silly but who cares! The skies are blue, the water is warm, and you can certainly dance to the music! Come along!

A Little Bit of Broadway

The Producers

I spent the day in a Juneau Lyric Opera retreat, where one of the recurring topics was how everything we do requires a producer. And just what was expected of a producer. And all thru the discussion, in the back of my brain I kept hearing music from the 2001 smash Tony Award winner, Mel Brook’s The Producers. So, that’s what we listening to this afternoon.

The story is pretty simple, a Broadway has-been and his unhappy accountant figure out that a major flop could make them more money than a smash. But the flop they produce – wrong play with the wrong director – is so bad it is actually good, and then they have major problems.

Nominated for 12 Tony’s, it won everyone of them! And 11 Drama Desk Awards!

A Little Bit of Broadway

The Woman in White

A story of love, betrayal and greed - Walter Hartright’s life is changed forever after a chance encounter with a mysterious woman, dressed in white, desperate to reveal her chilling secret. When he takes up his position as drawing master to the beautiful Laura Fairlie and her half sister, Marion, he sees in Laura’s face an eerie reflection of the forlorn creature he met previously. The evil Sir Pervival Glyde is plotting to take their wealth, but the mysterious, ghost-like woman in white, Anne Catherick, tries to help them by revealing a horrible secret.

The source of the musical is widely regarded as the first of the genre of "sensation novels", which led to the detective novels of today.

A Little Bit of Broadway

Before they were the Fab Four, there were five – John George, Paul, Stu and Pete. Backbeat tells the story of the Beatles time in Hamburg, learning how to be a band. So if you listen to this musical, don’t expect to hear a whole lot of early Beatles hits, except those thrown in at the end to provide a sop to those who really need it. This is when the Beatles were a basically a cover band, playing country, rock and roll and blues from America. It is also the story of how those five James Den wannabes became the moptop Fab Four. It hasn’t made it yet to Broadway (not that can tell, at least) and the reviews in LA were pretty mixed. Both the performers and the story has been panned. But that doesn’t mean the music’s not good.

We'll finish with film music from the actual Fab Four. Here's John, Paul, George and Ringo with music from the film HELP!

How to Succeed in Business Without Relly Trying

This week on Fresh Air Terry Gross talked with Daniel Radcliffe about his post Potter career. One of the things he did was head to Broadway to sing the leading role in the 2011 revival of How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. Listen to Harry Potter sing! And go to the NPR website to hear the interview.

A Little Bit of Broadway

Hands on a Hardbody

Sometimes you know why a show a hit or a flop. Maybe the stars just aren't aligned for success. It may be that a show is better suited for regional theater than the Broadway stage. That may be particularly true of "small town" or those country tinged shows that may not appeal to a more urban audience.

That's my take on what happened with Hands of a Hardbody, a musical based on the 1997 documentary documenting an endurance competition that took place in Longview, Texas. The yearly competition pits contestants against each other to see who can keep their hand on a pickup truck for the longest amount of time. Whoever endures the longest without leaning on the truck or squatting wins the truck. During the musical we learn the backstories of the 10 contestants and the reasons why they really, really, REALLY want that truck.
