A Little Bit of Broadway

In 1966 Kander and Ebb wrote a musical based on the 1939 short novel Goodbye to Berlin by Christopher Isherwood. Set in 1931 Berlin, it explores the relationship between English cabaret singer Sally Bowles and the American writer Cliff as Germany slowly (and sometimes not so slowly) embraces Nazism.

We are listening to the original cast recording today.  Joel Gray won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance of the MC in the 1972 film version to go along with his 1967 Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical Tony. The Broadway show won 7 Tonys.

There is a great interview on this morning's Weekend Edition Sunday with Joel Gray about the show.  Go listen!

There's a musical up for the Oscars -- Les Miserables has 8 Acadamy Award nominations.  Let's listen to some music from the film, starting with the song written especially for the film.

A Little Bit of Broadway

Today we learn the winners of the 2013 Grammy awards. One of the interesting things about the Grammy’s is that, instead of filling the show with announcements of who won what, the whole show is almost all the music they are celebrating and most of the 81 awards are announced during the afternoon brunch. So we already know the winner of best recording of a musical. It’s Once, the 2012 Tony Award winner for best musical. It’s the story of a young Dublin busker who falls in love with a Czech woman. They make lovely music together, and come to care about each other very much, but in the end, their ways must part.

To finish off this Sunday before Valentine’s Day, let’s listen to my favorite romantic musical – She Loves Me. Georg and Amelia are writing to each other anonymously and falling in love with each other. What they don’t know is that they work with each other and hate each other!

A Little Bit of Broadway

Peter Pan

In 1954 the stage exploded with Pirates and Indians and Lost Boys when James M. Barrie’s play Peter Pan was turned into a musical. We are listening to the original cast recording, with Mary Martin as the boy who won’t grow up and Cyril Ritchard as Captain Hook.  Both won Tony's for their performance.  If you are old enough, you will remember seeing the production on tv.

We’ll finish the time with another “fairy tale” musical – Disney’s retelling of Hans Christain Anderson's The Little Mermaid.
