A Little Bit of Broadway

Phantom of the Opera turns 25!

Saturday was the 25th anniversary of Phantom of the Opera on Broadway. And that is certainly worth celebrating! Based on the 1909 novel by Gaston Leroux, it tells the story of a disfigured genius who inhabits the bowels of the Paris Opera House. He falls in love with one of the ballet dancers, and decides to teach her to sing to become the star of the opera. Of course, things go horribly wrong.

You can hear all about last night‘s Phantom celebration on Weekend Edition Sunday. Listen to the music. Watch the movie.  Definitely see it live if you get the chance.

A Little Bit of Broadway

The Land Where the Good Songs Go

One of the most important of all composers for the Broadway stage is Jerome Kern. Kern wrote over 700 songs used in over 100 shows. Almost everyone knows a Jerome Kern song. Kern’s music built upon the older traditions but brought them up-to-date, and was among the first to use the music for move the plot along or to provide character development.

The 2012 revue The Land Where Good Songs Go actually has a really good story (not always the case in musical revues or jukebox musicals). And oh the songs! From 25 different shows and 11 different lyricists, this show is just a delight.

A Little Bit of Broadway

Company

In 1970 Stephen Sondheim wrote a “groundbreaking” musical about one man growing older, afraid of commitment and yet afraid of the alternative. What does that get him? Find out while we listen to the Tony Award winning musical – we are listening to the 1995 revival cast recording.

Music: Stephen Sondheim
Lyrics: Stephen Sondheim
Book: George Furth

We will finish with some songs from Sondheim’s first musical where he wrote both the words and music. Here’s music from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.
