A Little Bit of Broadway

The Little Mermaid

This afternoon’s opera was the story of Rusalka, a water-nymph who has fallen in love with the young prince who often visits the lake where she resides. Wishing to transform herself into a human, she visits the witch Jezibaba, from whom she learns that a potion will accomplish the task, but at a dreadful price. Not only will Rusalka lose her voice, but should the prince betray her, they will be forever damned.

I’m happy to say the Broadway version turns out a lot happier than Dvorak’s. In Disney’s The Little Mermaid, the mermaid Arial falls in love with a handsome prince. In order to transform herself into a human, she visits Ursula, where she all takes a trade where she will lose her voice but if she doesn’t win the prince, she’ll lose her soul.

We are listening to the Broadway stage version this afternoon.

Music Alan Menken
