I was having a conversation the other day with a women who wanted to introduce her children to musical theater. She was wondering what musicals were good ones to watch on DVD with her kids. We are listening to one of my recommendations. Peter Pan is a delightful story, with lots of kids, good music and just a little bit frightening. And who hasn’t wanted to be sprinkled with fairy dust and fly off to Never Land?

We are listening to the original cast recording today. You can get DVDs of the Mary Martin TV version, but the Cathy Rigby version is probably better for kids.

The Secret Garden

With all the cold and snowy and windy weather we’ve had the past week or so, I’ve been craving comforting things – fleece throws, warm gloves, comforting food (mac and cheese, anyone?) and comfort music fits right in! And one of the most comforting is The Secret Garden. Based on the children’ novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, it tells the story of Mary Lennox, an eleven year old English girl born and raised in India who is orphaned. She is sent to live with her uncle in Yorkshire, where she finds both a neglected garden, and a neglected cousin. Mary’s arrival brings new life to the garden, her cousin and her dour uncle.

Elf, The Broadway Musical
Buddy crawled into Santa's bag one Christmas Eve and was raised at the North Pole, thinking that he was an elf. However, he is so much bigger than all the other elves. He learns he is actually a real human being and goes to meet his real dad. But dad doesn't seem to believe him (or in Santa).

This Sunday we are listening to last year's limited run holiday musical Elf. Based on the 2003 movie, it tells the story of Buddy's search for his family.

In 1968, the powerhouse team of Burt Bacharach, Hal David and Neil Simon took the mega hit movie The Apartment and turned it into the award winning musical Promises, Promises. Chuck Baxter lends his apartment to his higher ups in hopes of a promotion. However, he finds out that the girl he really, really likes his the mistress of his boss. Sounds like a recipe for disaster, but it’s a lovely comedy, with several mega hits. We are listening to the 2010 revival cast with Sean Hayes and Kristen Chenoweth.

Most of us know Kristen Chenoweth on TV from her role on The West Wing. Her most famous Broadway role came in 2003, when she played Glinda the Good Witch in Wicked. Here are some numbers from Wicked that feature her.

South Pacific
It’s another cold Sunday, so it’s time to go somewhere warm, at least for the next 90 minutes. Today we will join Rodgers and Hammerstein in South Pacific, one of the greatest musicals of all time. Filled with classic songs, it tells the story of 2 couples during World War II, and how racial prejudice causes problems between both couples. One couple ends up with a happy ending, the other does not.

This musical has won so many awards, it would take pages to list them all. It has been filmed, revived, and done everywhere from Broadway to high schools.

We are listening to the 2005 concert version, with Reba McEntire as Nellie Forbush, Brian Stokes Mitchell as Emile, Alec Baldwin as Luther Billis and Lillias White as Bloody Mary.

It’s so cold today that we need something fun to help keep up warm. And the 1950 Frank Loesser’s musical setting of the stories of Damon Runyon certainly fits the bill. We are in New York, and Nathan Detroit, who runs the local oldest established permanent floating crap game in New York is broke and can’t find anywhere to hold the game. And there are lots of big rollers in town, including Sky Masterson. How Nathan gets his money and a location to hold the game, and how Sky falls in love with the Save a Soul Mission Sgt Sarah Brown is what Guys and Dolls is all about.

Another Broadway show from the 1950’s set in New York City is very different. Here’s music from the 2009 revival of West Side Story, in which many of the songs sung by the Puerto Ricans are sung in Spanish.
